A night of Bach, Piazzolla classics
    2022-02-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Young Chinese guitarist Kuang Junhong and accordionist Mao Junhao will play Bach’s “Italian Concerto, BWV 971,” “Suite No. 1 in G Major BWV 1007” and “Sonata in G Minor BWV 1020” and Astor Piazzolla’s “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” and “The History of Tango.”

Piazzolla revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed “nuevo tango,” incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. His fusion of tango with this wide range of recognizable Western musical elements was so successful that it produced a new individual style transcending those influences.

“The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” is a set of four tango compositions written between 1965 and 1970 for violin, piano, guitar, double bass and bandoneon. Piazzolla gives an impression of the four seasons in Buenos Aires, with several references to Vivaldi’s famous “The Four Seasons” that was written in the early 18th century.

“The History of Tango” was written in 1986. It was Piazzolla’s lifetime work to bring tango from bordellos in Argentina to concert halls in Europe. It attempted to convey the history and evolution of the tango in four pieces: “Bordello 1900,” “Cafe 1930,” “Nightclub 1960,” and “Modern Day Concert.”
