With thousands of stores across China, Lawson has finally landed in Shenzhen, with several stores recently opening in Nanshan, Futian and Bao’an districts. More stores will open across the city this year and you can also order deliveries via Lawson’s WeChat account (ID: tianhongweiwowell). The popular Japanese convenience store brand is famous for its large selection of food, such as packaged ready-to-eat meals, onigiri (Japanese-style rice balls), kushiyaki (Japanese-style grilled skewers), oden (Japanese-style one-pot dish with assorted meat balls and vegetables), as well as a variety of sandwiches and cakes. Lawson has its own brand for its food and beverages that have been developed through time for new flavors and ingredients. Whether you prefer salty or sweet, you’ll be hard pressed not to find a delicious snack in their 24-hour convenience stores. Below is a list of Lawson’s absolute classics that you can try. Devil’s Onigiri 恶魔的饭团 With the slogan “a delicious taste that is devilishly addictive,” Devil’s Onigiri may let you find yourself eating more than you need. First released in 2018, the rice ball, only sold in Lawson, proved a massive hit in Japan and China. It is cooked with Japanese-style soy sauce, filled with crispy tempura batter, bonito flakes and green seaweed, and rolled with dry laver seaweed. In Shenzhen, there are also other Lawson-branded rice balls filled with luncheon meat, chicken, fried eggs or tuna. Devil’s Onigiri probably will catch your eye because of a cute raccoon printed on the package. Snow Skin Moon Cakes 冰皮月亮蛋糕 This treat is a cake, not a mooncake. It is similar to a snow skin mooncake which has a chewy outer layer but the filling is a cake with cream. In Shenzhen, Snow Skin Moon Cakes have flavors of chocolate, Oreo, grape, peach and oolong tea. You can enjoy the taste of milky cream and the lightness of the cakes. Maritozzo 马里托佐面包 The maritozzo is a typical Italian sweet bun of the Lazio region, specifically from Rome. It’s a delicious dough-based delight that has been enjoyed by Romans for centuries. A light cream sandwiched with a brioche dough give this treat a soft, fluffy texture with a milky flavor that melts in the mouth. Baschee 巴斯克蛋糕 Basque cheesecake is a trendy cheesecake originating from Spain and has made its way around the world. Lawson’s Baschee saw incredible sales after it was launched in 2019. In Japan, a million cakes were sold in just three days, becoming Lawson’s signature sweet. The cake with caramel has a smooth texture that falls between a baked and cold-set cheesecake, with a rich cream cheese flavor and a fragrant caramelized surface. A touch of burnt caramel adds bitterness to the top. Oden and kushiyaki 关东煮和串烧 Oden and kushiyaki, sold on sticks and usually eaten from a paper cup, are both popular Japanese snacks that can be served as light meals in a fast-paced city. Like a mini hotpot, oden includes assorted meatballs and vegetables, such as beef balls, crab meat balls, curry fish balls, kombu, turnip, tofu and vermicelli knots, cooked in a light, soy-flavored dashi broth. In Lawson’s Shenzhen stores, shoppers can not only buy classic kushiyaki (skewered and grilled) items, such as karaage chicken, pork, seafood, tofu and sausages, but also can try Chinese roujiamo (meat burger), egg tarts, fried chicken and Chinese pancake rolls with various fillings.
