Global Economic News

SAMSUNG Heavy Industries, the world’s No. 3 shipbuilder by order backlog, said Monday that it has won shipbuilding orders for five large container ships worth 803.6 billion won (US$656 million) from an Asian shipping company.

Samsung Heavy said in a statement that it has obtained the order to build the 13,100 twenty-foot equivalent unit container carriers from an unidentified Asian shipper.

The container vessels will have such top-of-the-line equipment as the selective catalytic reduction, ballast water treatment systems and various energy saving devices to meet international environment regulations. In addition, a smart ship solution is installed to operate the ship more economically and safely.

The ships will be delivered sequentially to the ship owner by December 2024.

With its latest order, Samsung Heavy has already won orders for 13 ships worth US$2 billion this year, or 23% of its yearly order target of US$8.8 billion.
