叮咚鸡
    2022-04-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“叮咚” is a Chinese phrase that mimics the sound of the doorbell, and “鸡” literally means “chicken.” This term, made popular by the official WeChat account of the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission, is the mispronunciation of the Mandarin “等通知” (děng tōngzhī, meaning “wait for further notice”) by those whose mother tongue is the Cantonese dialect. The commission, known for its humor, used the term March 20 to ask citizens to be patient and wait for further notice during a lockdown implemented to contain the flare-up of the Omicron variant of coronavirus.

Example:

A: 你家娃什么时候能回去上学?

Nǐjiā wá shénme shíhòu néng huíqù shàngxué?

When will your kid be able to go back to school?

B: 快了,还在“叮咚鸡”。

Kuài le,háizài dīngdōngjī。

Soon, but we are still waiting for further notice.
