Museums, art spaces reopen; here’s what to expect

Shenzhen’s landmark museums and art spaces are once again welcoming art and history enthusiasts through their doors. This week, many have started to reopen and more are planning to do so in the coming days. Below we share the exhibitions to know about and dates to mark on your calendar.

Visitors are required to present negative 72-hour nucleic acid test results to access the venues. People with their Travel Card on mobile phones showing a star, which means they have traveled to cities with medium- and high-risk COVID areas in the past 14 days, will be barred from the public places.

Dunhuang art

The beloved Dunhuang art exhibition is extended through April 14 and visitors can seize the last chance to admire four life-sized Mogao cave replicas with dazzling mural reproductions all over their walls and ceilings. In addition to the “caves” where visitors can get an immersive view of the magnificent Dunhuang art, Buddha statues, silk products, pottery and mural replicas are also on display.

Ming Dynasty porcelains

The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) porcelains are some of the world’s most desirable works of art due to their fine ceramics, intricate designs and craftsmanship. Visitors can admire these beautiful porcelains at an exhibition running through this Sunday.

Ancient relics

A new exhibition of relics excavated from the underground palaces of Jingzhi Temple and Jingzhongyuan Pagoda in Dingzhou, Hebei Province is being held through June 5. The exhibits are mostly from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) or earlier. An additional exhibition on ancient Chinese scholar-officials, running through Sunday, features 150 cultural relics from the National Museum of China. Meanwhile, relics on loan from the Guo State Museum which was built on the burial ground of the Guo State in the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 B.C.) in Henan Province are also on display through May 15.

Female artists’ works

The “In Working: Women Art Practice” exhibition showcases contemporary artworks by 16 female artists who have lived overseas for a long time or have long been traveling between China and abroad. It takes a close look at overseas Chinese female artists and the diverse possibilities of expression. Another exhibition reviewing the fundraising activities by Chinese revolutionary and artist He Xiangning (1878-1972) during wartime in the 1920s is also being held through this Sunday.

Cartoons and Chinese design

Chinese illustrator Tango is exhibiting his cat-themed cartoons at a specially designed exhibition (38 yuan) through June 26. The artist has gained global popularity for his quirky cartoons, which poke fun at the oddities of modern life. Meanwhile, “Values of Design: China in the Making” is Design Society’s permanent exhibition exploring the growing field of Chinese design. The exhibition (68 yuan) was curated by Shenzhen’s Design Society in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum in Britain.

Paintings

Chinese landscape paintings created in the 1960s-1980s by Guangdong artist Lin Fengsu (1939-2017) are on display at the “Mountains of My Own” exhibition. Lin had been instructed by Lingnan painting masters Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai and was adept at experimenting with various colors and infusing modern visual languages. Meanwhile, the Guan Shanyue Art Museum is also exhibiting its collected paintings by master Guan (1912-2000). Additional paintings by young Chinese artists are also on display. The ending dates of these exhibitions haven’t yet been announced.

‘Boomerang — OCAT Biennale 2021’

Art lovers can take time to view about 100 contemporary artworks created by 70 artists during the “Boomerang — OCAT Biennale 2021.” The biennale, running through May 22, uses boomerang as its theme to reflect forces and counter forces.

OCAT Shenzhen requires booking (WeChat account: “OCATShenzhen”) in advance and offers free admission; OCT Art & Design Gallery’s ticket is 30 yuan and no booking is required.

Yongle Palace art

Mural replicas, rubbings, architecture models and colored glaze items are on display at “The Glory Within Authenticity” exhibition which has been extended through May 4. The exhibition shows the cultural and artistic charm of Yongle Palace that was built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) in Shanxi Province.

Ink paintings and contemporary art

Abstract ink paintings created by modern Chinese artists are on display through April 17 and “Sublimation: Chinese Contemporary Art Invitational Exhibition” is also being held through May 4.

‘One Piece’

The immersive exhibition (78 yuan) celebrating the 1,000th episode of Japanese manga “One Piece” has been extended through April 17.

‘Voyages’ and ‘Distortion’

Chinese illustrator Chen Zu’er is exhibiting her works at the “Voyages • Dans les Mondes Merveilleux” (68 yuan) exhibition through May 8. Her artworks draw attention from passers-by with a clear sense of Eastern elegance tinted with a Western expressiveness. Meanwhile, the “Distortion” exhibition (78 yuan), running through April 17, features thoughtful contemporary artworks.

Several other museums, including Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art & Urban Planning (WeChat account: “深圳市当代艺术与城市规划馆”), Pingshan Art Museum (WeChat account: “PingshanArtMuseum”), China Printmaking Museum (WeChat account: “GL_PRINTS”) and HQB Museum (WeChat account: “HQB_Museum”), have returned as well. Citizens should book their visit via the museums’ official WeChat accounts, while seniors aged 60 or older showing ID cards can enter the venues without booking.
