“Sublimation: Chinese Contemporary Art Invitational Exhibition” is being held at the Guangming Culture and Art Center, where abstract ink paintings created by modern Chinese artists are also on display at another exhibition. At the “Sublimation” exhibition, Shi Jindian’s works, such as “Piano,” are based on industrial products with particular significance in social, political and cultural life, as well as symbols of the times. The transformation of this kind of strong symbolic objects from materiality to unfamiliarity eventually generates an unexpected sense of fascination. This time-consuming and calm, meditation-like creative process and the manpower involved are the artist’s total objection to the industrial products deconstructed. To him, all the initiatives might merely be ignited by the desire for a change in traditional artistic language of sculptures, but in terms of the cultural aspect, it is an effective means to execute the analysis of cultural symbols. Yuan Xiaotian’s installation, “Flow,” weaves thin metal threads into translucent folded fabric that twists and hangs in midair. “Many people, seeing this installation for the first time, will think it’s made of cloth or silk, but it’s in fact made of metal. I think it is just like women, who can be gentle, but also very strong inside. It is a representation of the saying ‘an iron fist in a velvet glove,’” Yuan says.
