Locals will have a rare opportunity to watch 20 award-winning Filipino short films at Broadway Cinematheque Shenzhen in Nanshan District to have a glimpse into the Asian country’s history, culture, ethnicity and geography.

All the films are in their original languages with English and Chinese subtitles.

Moviegoers are required to present negative nucleic acid test results issued within 48 hours at the entrance.

The short films are from veteran independent filmmakers John Torres and Carlo Francisco Manatad and young filmmakers Carla Pulido Ocampo, Che Tagyamon, Glenn Barit, Joanne Cesario and Sonny Calvento.

Torres’ works fictionalize and rework documentations of love, family relations, and memory in relation to current events, hearsays, myths and folklore. He teaches at the Ateneo de Manila University and conducts filmmaking workshops.

Monatad’s first feature film, “Whether the Weather Is Fine,” a film about the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan of his hometown Tacloban, won the Youth Jury Prize at the 74th Locarno Film Festival.

Ocampo is best known for her filmography centering on the culture and lore of the indigenous Bontok Igorot people. Her short film “Tokwifi” won the Special Jury Prize at the Seventh QCinema International Film Festival in 2019.

Cesario melds personal and collective histories on labor, women’s issues, and ever-shifting landscapes and spaces. In 2020 her short film “Here, Here” competed at the Locarno Film Festival, and in 2021 won the Best New Visions Short award at the 64th San Francisco International Film Festival. She currently works freelance in film and art while campaigning for workers’ rights in association with an independent labor center in the Philippines.

Tagyamo’s works often address the subjects of diaspora, class, and memory in relation to women’s psyche. In 2019, she was among the grantees of the first edition of Southeast Asian Short Film Grant by the Singapore International Film Festival.

Barit’s narrative short “Aliens Ata” (2017) has won the Cinemalaya’s NETPAC Special Jury Prize for its creative approach on using a technology in delivering a wider perspective on the issues of diaspora, love and distance.

Calvento’s fantasy comedy “Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss” (2019) entered the 2021 Sundance Film Festival as one of the 13 international fiction short films. The same film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and the Shanghai International Film Festival, to name a few.
