THE Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) ranked the 35th in the 2022 Best Chinese Universities Ranking recently released by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. SUSTech was six spots up on the list over the previous year. The ranking surveyed a total of 590 higher learning institutions in China. Tsinghua, Peking and Zhejiang universities made the top three, followed by Shanghai Jiaotong and Fudan universities. The rest of the top 10 in the list are Nanjing University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University and Xi’an Jiaotong University. Among the top 100 universities, 89 are included in the construction of world-class universities and first-class disciplines, dubbed the “Double First-Class” initiative, accredited by the Ministry of Education. SUSTech was the only university from Shenzhen and the youngest university in China that has been listed in the national plan for the construction of “Double First-Class” universities. Shenzhen University ranked 68th for its comprehensive strength and is one of the 11 universities that made the top 100 list without being a university in the “Double First-Class” list. In another ranking, eight scientists from Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School have made the Career Impact list of Stanford University’s list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists and 19 other scientists from the graduate school have made the Single Year Impact list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists. Stanford University’s list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists is based on the bibliometric information contained in the Scopus database and includes over 160,000 researchers from the more than 8 million scientists considered to be active worldwide, with 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields taken into account. The local scientists who made the list mainly engage in biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence (AR), network telecommunications, chemistry and materials sciences, urban and regional planning, and environmental and ecological sciences.
