SZ to build State-level ocean aquaculture
    2022-04-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN is scheduled to build its first State-level marine aquaculture in Dapeng New Area’s waters at the end of this year, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

In 2017, a plan for marine plant and animal farming in Dapeng Bay was initiated. With environmental influence assessment and preparation work completed, the artificial reefs will be built in 7.48 square kilometers of coastal waters, a source from Dapeng administration of the city’s planning and natural resources bureau said.

Dapeng Bay marine farm will be the country’s first coral-themed national ocean ranching demonstration area. The project will build artificial reefs, propagate and release aquatic organisms, breed and rear fishery resources, as well as protect rare and endangered marine species, in a bid to conserve habitat and fishery for corals, blackhead seabreams (acanthopagrus schlegelii), groupers (epinephelinae), daggertooth pike congers (muraenesox cinereus) and cuttlefish (sepiella maindroni).

The head of Shenzhen Fishery Development Research Center said that since 2003, three marine farming pilot zones have been built on the eastern coast of Shenzhen. These farms have become habitats for fish, crabs, shrimp and mantis shrimp.

In March this year, Dapeng Bay was nominated for the Beautiful Ocean Bay list by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. As of now, the bay has built 28 artificial reefs, reared 10,000 corals, and released a large amount of fry and shrimp seeds. It boasts over 190 species of marine nekton, over 130 species of phytoplankton, over 60 species of corals, with up to 50% of key coral areas being covered by live corals..

According to the 2021 China Marine Economy Statistical Communiqué, the country’s marine economy’s GDP surpassed 9 trillion yuan (US$1.39 trillion) last year, up by 8.3% year on year. It contributes to 8% of the national economic growth and accounts for 15% of the coastal areas’ GDP.
