Role model serves community
    2022-05-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE family of a 67-year-old woman named Mo Rong won the title of most beautiful family in China 2021. Whenever her name is mentioned, neighbors would give the thumbs-up, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

For most people, the past eight years may have passed by like a blink of an eye; however, to Mo, time had passed by more slowly.

Over the past eight years, Mo had been taking care of her granddaughter identified as Beibei who had cerebral palsy.

“Her body was like soft cotton without bones. She suffered seizures frequently,” said Mo, almost in a choked voice.

Beibei was diagnosed with Ohtahara syndrome one month after her birth. Mo was told there was no chance for her recovery after consultation.

Checkups showed that Beibei’s organs are healthy except for her brain. Mo thus decided to take care of Beibei at home.

Caring for Beibei lasts day and night, and Mo barely slept well since she started looking after Beibei.

With Beibei’s mother suffering from mental illness, Mo then became the family’s backbone.

Mo learned skills from therapists and started applying them to Beibei at home. Gradually, Mo saw changes in Beibei’s facial expressions, which were very encouraging news for the family.

Mo observed that it is necessary to help others when they go through a lot of pressures in life. In 2014, Mo established an association for elderly people where she taught them to sing and dance.

In 2016, a member of the association was sick and hospitalized. Mo urged fellow members to take turns caring for the patient, whose children were unable to look after him.

In addition to offering help to lonely old people, special children and families, Mo and her association’s members donated over 8,000 yuan (US$1,186) to Wuhan in 2020 when the city was hit hard by COVID-19.

In 2021, she raised money for people in Henan Province when it was struck by massive flooding.

During the city’s recent fight against the pandemic, Mo organized members to work as volunteers at testing locations. Not long ago, the association donated over 200 books to children living in the country’s rural areas, according to the report.
