THE Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) advanced 49 places to 226th in the 2023 QS World University Rankings released Friday by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British international education market consulting company.

The ranking features a total of 1,418 universities in the world, making it QS’s biggest ranking yet.

Among mainland universities, SUStech advanced two places, ranking 11th.

A total of 71 mainland universities entered the list, ranking third in the world and first in Asia. Peking and Tsinghua universities ranked 12th and 14th, while Fudan, Zhejiang, Shanghai Jiaotong, Nanjing, Wuhan and Tongji universities and the University of Science and Technology of China entered world top 300.

In terms of local universities, Shenzhen University ranked between 581st and 590th in the world and 35th in mainland universities. Other three universities from Guangdong, namely Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology and Jinan University entered the top 50 among mainland universities.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrates an unprecedented, unbroken decade as the world’s best university for 11 years. The University of Cambridge advanced its ranking to second and Leland Stanford Junior University kept its ranking at third. the National University of Singapore was named the best university in Asia and ranked 11th in the world for five straight years.

The QS World University Rankings, which are updated annually, are made up of six metrics – academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio. For the 2023 ranking, Quacquarelli Symonds added two new indexes — employability and international research network.

SUSTech, established in Shenzhen nearly 12 years ago, now has 29 faculties and centers. Among its 37 disciplines for undergraduate studies, five of them have been recognized as leading disciplines in China and eight were recognized as leading disciplines in Guangdong. The university’s Department of Mathematics, established in 2015, has been enlisted into the second batch of the World First-class University and First-class Academic Discipline for Construction by the Ministry of Education. It was the first time for a local university from Shenzhen, and the youngest university in China, to be listed into the national plan of double first-class construction.
