City to work with JD to build global consumption center

CHINA’S e-commerce platform JD.com plans to deepen collaboration with the Shenzhen government in building the city into an international consumption center and further tap its local long-term consumption potential.

Jiang Fan, vice president of the Digital City Cluster for JD Technology, made the remarks at a press conference held online Wednesday.

The press conference came after the release of the China Consumption Promoting Digital intelligent Development Report 2022 by the China International Electronic Commerce Center and JD Technology, a fintech unit of JD.com.

Facing a shock to the supply chain and a shrinking market demand as a result of COVID-19, many Chinese cities have adopted measures to stabilize economic performance, in an effort to get the economy back to normal track.

According to the report, digital intelligent technologies help the government implement spurring spending measures more effectively and productively, by achieving omni-scenario connection between consumers and sellers beyond time and space.

Starting May 1, the commerce bureau and the industry and information technology bureau of Shenzhen have jointly given out shopping vouchers worth 400 million yuan (US$59.7 million) in four phases via the JD.com app, which will run through July 10.

The platform’s statistics showed that over 1.5 million vouchers, with a total value of 50 million yuan, that were distributed from May 1 to 3 generated some 300 million yuan in consumption.

“The shopping vouchers campaign has fueled a consumer boom in the city,” said Jiang. “Building on this cooperation, JD.com will deepen the collaboration with the Shenzhen government and the commerce bureau in building a global consumption center as one of the city’s long-term economic development goals.”

He said that the high-tech company will design a service system for Shenzhen, with which the local government, businesses and residents can benefit from its infrastructure, a platform integrating consumption resources for catering, accommodation, travel, tourism, shopping and entertainment.

Shenzhen aims to preliminarily construct a consumption center that is globally influential, competitive and reputable by 2025.

The city’s total retail sales of consumer goods reached 949.81 billion yuan last year, up 9.6% year on year, and are expected to go over the 1-trillion-yuan mark this year, according to the commerce bureau.
