Richard Han 1824295095@qq.com THE Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Dapeng New Area will develop cooperation in nine aspects, including jointly building an ocean science research institute and a high-tech industrial base and introducing high-end talent, according to an agreement signed last week. The ocean science research institute will serve as an interim entity for the teaching and research work in Dapeng before the official inauguration of Shenzhen Ocean University. The two sides will contribute to the city’s strategy on building a global marine central city through high-level international marine forum, exhibitions and marine tech competitions, according to the agreement. Earlier this year, the Shenzhen government passed the plan and commissioned SUSTech to be responsible for building the ocean university, an important project for the city to speed up constructing itself into a global marine central city. In Dapeng New Area’s 14th Five-year Plan (2021-2025), the city supports constructing the university as world-leading with top-notch disciplines. According to the plan, the ocean university will be built in Baguang in Dapeng. It covers 65 hectares and has a construction budget of 4.8 billion yuan (US$718 million). The city has also reserved 27 hectares of land parcels for its future development. It will integrate bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate education, and based on Shenzhen’s marine economy development as well as references to world-renowned ocean universities, 10,000 students will be housed on campus. |
