THE city’s Metro operation reduced 784,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission last year, or 46.8 grams per kilometer per person, equivalent to a 39,200-hectare forest absorbing carbon dioxide a year, data from Shenzhen Metro Group recently showed.
Shenzhen's Metro network handled 2.17 billion passenger trips in 2021, accounting for 60.4% of the city's public transportation ridership. Based on the calculation methods on low-carbon public transportation, Shenzhen's Metro network can help reduce 2,000 tons a day of carbon dioxide emissions, Shenzhen Metro Group said.
The operator will apply intelligent environment control system on its Phase IV projects which will save 35% of the energy on all Phase IV lines. The system, which can effectively control and operate the ventilation system, could help save 230 million yuan (US$34.25 million) during its whole life cycle.
At the Huangmugang Transport Hub that has a floor space of 150,000 square meters, the contractor installed cadmium telluride photovoltaic panels at the exits and entrances, and elevator lobbies above ground, which provide light in public areas and power supply to split air conditioners, antitheft roller shutters and water heaters. The photovoltaic panels can generate 379,600 kWh a year, reducing 3 tons of carbon dioxide emission and 0.8 tons of sulfurates, and saving 120 tons of standard coal. The 12 elevated stations on Metro Line 6 have also adopted the photovoltaic power system, which generates about 2 million kWh of power, or 30% of the stations’ power use, a year for the stations. |
