HE JUNKANG, an occupational therapist from Shenzhen Nan’ao People’s Hospital, has recently given a gift of hope to a leukemia patient in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province by donating 271 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), Nanfang Plus reported.
“As a medical worker, I know more how valuable life is. When someone is in need of help, I should come forward,” the 24-year-old was quoted as saying.
On June 14, which was his birthday, He received a call from the Shenzhen workstation of the Guangdong branch of China Marrow Donor Program, informing him that his blood sample information successfully matched with a blood disease patient waiting for transplantation in Suzhou.
When He was asked about whether he was willing to donate HSCs, he agreed without hesitation. “Being able to match a patient successfully is a kind of luck, and I felt duty bound to help,” he said.
He matched with a patient who was critically ill. In order to complete HSC transplantation as soon as possible, He’s physical examination and other relevant procedures were carried out simultaneously, which greatly accelerated the patient’s transplantation process.
On July 11, He was hospitalized at the Second People’s Hospital of Shenzhen for HSC mobilization and completed his donation four days later.
He became the 520th and 13,566th HSC donor in Shenzhen and China, respectively.
