GBA to build 15,000 km expressway network

THE Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) will have preliminarily built an expressway network spanning 15,000 kilometers by 2035, according to Guangdong Province’s expressway network planning, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

Shenzhen, a core city in the GBA, has seen its highway mileage growing rapidly. According to the city’s transport bureau, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Shenzhen will speed up the construction of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, the second Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway and Phase III of the Outer Ring Expressway.

The city will work on the expansion and reconstruction of road sections with heavy traffic such as Jihe-Huiyan Expressway and Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway. It is expected that the mileage of the newly built, reconstructed and expanded expressways will exceed 150 kilometers.

By the end of the five-year period, the mileage of Shenzhen’s expressways will reach 425 kilometers, which will strongly support the high-quality development of the GBA and Shenzhen metropolitan circle.

According to the national highway network plan recently issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport, Shenzhen is involved in the construction of several main expressways and national highways.

The main expressways include the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, the G15 Shenyang-Haikou Expressway, the G25 Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway and the G94 Pearl River Delta Ring Expressway.

The newly added G0412 Shenzhen-Nanning Expressway will run through the cities of Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Maoming in Guangdong Province and the cities of Yulin and Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The expressway will further promote resource circulation on the east and west sides of the Pearl River and strengthen the traffic links between the GBA and western Guangdong and Guangxi.

At present, the highway bridges across the Pearl River include the Humen, Nansha, Huangpu and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridges. There are seven other channels under construction and being planned.

Statistics show that the GBA’s expressway mileage that is open to traffic has exceeded 4,500 kilometers so far. Additionally, 13 new routes will be added to the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Corridor in the future, according to the GBA’s relevant traffic planning.

In another development, after 523 days of construction, the left and right lines of the Huangmao Sea Channel project’s Shishan Tunnel were successfully completed, which was ahead of schedule, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday.

The project is expected to be opened to traffic in 2024. After completion, it will form a cross-sea and cross-river passage network in the GBA together with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, Nansha Bridge and Humen Bridge.

The sea channel project runs about 31 kilometers, where the cross-sea section is about 14 kilometers. Two super large cable-stayed bridges, two tunnels and four interchanges will be set up.
