Missing sugar glider returns home
    2022-08-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WU YONGPENG, a Futian resident, was finally able to welcome his family pet, a Petaurus breviceps commonly known as sugar glider or sugar bear, back to home Monday after they had been apart for six days. With the joint efforts of his neighbors and other warm-hearted people, the missing sugar glider finally returned home, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Wu and his family have raised the pet for a year and half. Wu said the animal was his younger daughter’s birthday gift from his older daughter.

The sugar bear secretly opened its cage and sneaked to the balcony in the early morning of Aug. 2. Wu rushed to the balcony to catch the sugar bear but failed. Soon, the bear jumped onto the greenbelt downstairs and disappeared.

Later that day, Wu sent a message to his neighbors via a WeChat group to ask for help to find the little pet. However, no clues were found in the next few days.

News came Saturday afternoon. A neighbor learned from a hair salon in their community that its staffers saw a little animal in the salon’s shop window. The neighbor shot a video of the animal to let Wu check if it was the one he was missing.

Wu confirmed it is his sugar bear. It was difficult, however, for them to take the little pet out as it had been hiding in the salon’s shop window that has a three-meter-high back board sealed on three sides. They dug a hole in the back board with the help of the manager of the housing compound’s property management office and the salon’s owner, but were still unable to reach and rescue the sugar bear.

Good news finally came Monday morning. Mysteriously, the sugar bear was found a security guard staying inside an e-bike basket. No one knew how the sugar bear came out from the shop window, said the report.
