State-level ocean farm to be built in Dapeng Bay
    2022-08-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN on Monday unveiled details of its first State-level marine ranch project of artificial reefs in 49 hectares of coastal waters in Dapeng Bay, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

According to the city’s planning and natural resources bureau, the project spans 49.0056 hectares and is 5 meters deep. The reefs will be made with permeable structures.

The Dapeng Bay ocean farm was listed among the country’s fourth batch of national marine ranch demonstration areas in 2018. It will use the sea areas for public welfare, and its period of use is 40 years.

Shenzhen will break ground on the project at the end of this year. It is expected to adopt artificial reefs, propagate and release aquatic organisms, breed and rear fishery resources, and protect rare and endangered marine species.

It aims to conserve the habitat and fishery for corals, blackhead seabreams (acanthopagrus schlegelii), groupers (epinephelinae), daggertooth pike congers (muraenesox cinereus), and sepiella maindroni.

At present, China boasts 153 State-level marine ranch demonstration areas, which have three types: breeding, conservation and leisure farms.

The ranches have generated prominent benefits in terms of economy, ecology and society. This approach to aquaculture has helped increase the biodiversity of coral reefs and fish species.

Artificial reefs can increase fish yields, so it is estimated that the 153 marine ranches can rake in 6.5 billion yuan (US$956.53 million) in additional income each year.

Marine farms have become popular destinations for tourism and leisure fishing. They also promote industries related to marine engineering equipment and ocean information and electronics manufacturing.
