ZHOU XIAPING, director of the gynecology department of Shenzhen Bao’an Women’s and Children’s Hospital, was among the 78 recipients of this year’s “Medal of Chinese Medical Worker” on Friday, China’s Doctors’ Day, also known as Medical Workers’ Day.

Zhou was the only Shenzhen doctor who won the award this year.

The award is the top honor in China’s medical community and aims to commend outstanding medical workers who have made remarkable contributions.

Zhou is a clinical medical expert who has been working for over 40 years and has built a reputation for his superb medical skills.

Over the decades, Zhou had completed 10,391 difficult and complicated gynecological laparoscopic operations so far.

After receiving the award, Zhou said he will continue to be committed to promoting the development of obstetrics and gynecology in Shenzhen and serving patients with benevolence.

As of July 31 this year, Shenzhen had a total of 63,224 physicians, statistics from Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission showed.

The city had 266 overseas physicians and doctors, including 49 from foreign countries, 207 from Hong Kong and Macao, and 10 from Taiwan.

In recent years, Shenzhen has been working to improve medical staffers’ salaries, career development and working environment to fully raise their enthusiasm, initiative and creativity, according to the city’s health commission.
