THE trade of “small giant” enterprises in the city, which engage in professional and specialized niche markets, reached 24.18 billion yuan (US$3.46 billion) between January and August, up by 28.9% year on year, data from Shenzhen Customs showed Thursday.

The calculation is based on 130 enterprises with trade records at Shenzhen Customs.

Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information (MII) unveiled a list that included 276 enterprises from Shenzhen into its fourth batch of small giant enterprises that have been given priority for further growth. Shenzhen now has a total of 445 State-level small giant enterprises, ranking the third among major Chinese cities, after Beijing and Shanghai.

Among MII’s fourth batch of small giant enterprises, 88 enterprises, including nine listed companies, come from Nanshan District.

The enterprises involved are mainly engaged in niche markets in computer, telecommunications and other electrical equipment manufacturing, wholesale, and software and information technology services.

Bao’an District’s new small giant enterprises, around 45 in total, mainly engage in the manufacturing industry as the district has a complete industrial chain.

Small giant enterprises have great development potential as they are highly specialized, adaptive to market changes, and set sights on research and development, according to Chen Xiaolin, deputy chief of Shenzhen Municipal Service Bureau for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. State-level small giant enterprises can each get a reward of 6 million yuan from the country, which is given out evenly in three years. At the municipal level, the city will reward 500,000 yuan to a small giant enterprise that won a national title, and 200,000 yuan for a provincial title.

By 2025, as per the city’s plan, the number of State-level giants from Shenzhen will reach 600. The city will cultivate a total of 10,000 small giants including 2,000 holding a provincial title.
