CONSTRUCTION on the Shenzhen-Jiangmen High-speed Railway officially kicked off yesterday, when an inauguration ceremony was held in Dongguan City.

Upon completion in 2028, the 116-kilometer railway will bring Qianhai & Shekou Area of China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Shenzhen and the Nansha FTZ in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, into a half-hour life circle and contribute to the construction of 30-minute life and economic circles for GBA cities. It is highly significant in promoting economic and social development of regions along the route, and the province’s coordinated development, according to China Railway.

The rail starts from Xili Station in Shenzhen and ends at Jiangmen Station of the Jiangmen-Zhanjiang Railway, passing through Dongguan, Guangzhou, Zhongshan and Jiangmen cities. A single trip will take one hour.

The line will have seven stations — Xili and Shenzhen Airport East stations in Shenzhen, Binhai Bay Station in Dongguan, Nansha Station in Guangzhou, Zhongshan North and Heng-lan stations in Zhongshan, and Jiangmen Station in Jiangmen. Six of the stations will be newly built.

The railway project consists of bridges spanning 69.2 kilometers and tunnels spanning 45.1 kilometers.

The tunnel project at the Pearl River Estuary, a key project of the railway, will go as low as 115 meters underwater and will be the deepest tunnel with the heaviest water pressure in China, according to the Guangzhou Railway Group Corp.

When the tunnel is completed, a trip from Nansha Station to Binhai Bay Station will take only four minutes.
