Shenzhen scholar elected as Academia Europaea member

PROFESSOR Liu Honghai from the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen (HITSZ) has been elected as a member of Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe), DT News reported Thursday.


Liu received a Ph.D. in Intelligent Robotics from King’s College, University of London. His research focuses on motion sensing and understanding and its applications to human machine systems.


Liu also presided over many projects, such as key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, key basic research projects in Guangdong Province and Shenzhen. He has won many awards for the best papers in international conferences.


HITSZ has formed a “master+team” pattern, with academicians as the team leader, national high-level talents as the backbone and national young talents as the main body. At present, HITSZ has seven full-time academicians, 51 national high-level talents and 55 national youth talents.


This year, three Shenzhen professors have become members of Academia Europaea.


In July 2022, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) announced that Lin Jian, chair professor of the university’s Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE), was elected as a member of the Academia Europaea.


Lin joined the university in 2022. His research was selected as one of the Top 10 Advancements in Ocean Science and Technology in China in 2019. He won the first prize of the Guangdong Natural Science Award in 2020, and received the grand prize of the 2021 Ocean Science and Technology Award. He has also published a series of papers in top international journals such as Nature and Science, with one of his earthquake research papers ranked by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) as the most-cited paper in the field in a decade.


In August 2022, Chen Youhai, chair professor and dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), became a member of Academia Europaea.


Chen got his Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba, Canada. After postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School, he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. He was a professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine until 2020. He joined SIAT in 2021. He has authored more than 150 research articles, and chaired a number of academic and administrative committees at academic or pharmaceutical institutions. Chen’s research focused on inflammation and cancer.


Academia Europaea was founded in 1988. It is a nongovernmental research institution based in London, with over 4,000 members across the world.  (Windy Shao)
