THE 23rd Shenzhen Reading Month, with over 2,300 activities lined up, will be launched at Shenzhen Book City CBD Store on Saturday, according to the event’s organizers.

This year’s reading month will be the first large-scale cultural activity held in Shenzhen after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, a meeting that has laid out major policies and strategic plans to advance the cause of the Party and country in the new era.

With a focus on the study, publicity and implementation of the spirit of the congress, a special section will be launched during the reading month, with key activities such as classic poetry and prose recitation, Shenzhen Reading Forum, reading guided by famous writers and scholars, and a themed book exhibition planned to motivate more citizens to participate.

The reading month will specifically organize a series of activities featuring five dialogues and two exhibitions, to further promote the connectivity between Shenzhen and Hong Kong in the context of cultural connection, cultural integration, mutual benefit and common prosperity, according to the organizers.

The series of activities, in essence, is to discover the unique characteristics and spirit of the two cities through reading. Renowned scholars from Shenzhen and Hong Kong will be invited to talk in person, focusing on different fields such as the beauty of urban ecology, entrepreneurship, literary charm, film music and artistic atmosphere.

The reading month will set up three special sections for science, culture and art to showcase Shenzhen’s urban spirit. The top 10 books and top 10 children’s books will continue to be launched to recommend high-quality book lists to the public.

In addition, the fourth Shenzhen Book Fair will also be held simultaneously during the reading month.

According to the event’s organizers, the reading month will launch an activity that invites readers and book lovers in all fields to continuously recommend good books online, so that citizens can revel in a reading feast online.

The fourth Shenzhen Book Fair will also launch the “Cloud Book Fair,” which aims to give citizens a new online reading experience.

Nanshan District, as a reading month subvenue, has prepared over 300 themed reading activities. Many of the activities will be held in beautiful and culturally significant places such as Shekou I-Factory and Sea World Culture and Arts Center.
