Firefighters provide tips to prevent, survive stampede
    2022-11-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SEOUL’S deadly Halloween disaster has raised the public’s concern on how to prevent and survive a stampede or crowd crush. Firefighters from Tianbei firefighting station in Luohu District provided some tips to Shenzhen Evening News on Sunday.

Gu Linbo, a firefighter, introduced that festivals and events gather huge crowds, leading to the risk of crushes or stampedes. “When you find you might be in danger, try to protect yourself with three dos and four don’ts,” Gu said.

When Gu explained the three dos, he suggested that: 1) leave the scene in a timely manner upon detecting congestion; 2) find a safe location or stay still on their feet when crowding arises; and 3) try to lean back against a wall or hold on to a secure object.

The four don’ts are: 1) don’t shout in the crowd to avoid panic and chaos; 2) once in the crowd, don’t go against the flow and keep walking to avoid the risks of being pushed over; 3) when in danger, don’t lean forward; and 4) don’t pick up items on the ground when in danger because it will make it easier for one to fall in the crowd.

While standing in a crowd, a person in danger is advised to use his or her right hand to hold the left wrist, with the left hand clenched in a fist. Raise elbows at chest height to give space for unobstructed breathing.

Gu suggested people in danger to line up upon evacuation and put their arm on the shoulders of the people in front. Shout loudly to ask other people not to move forward when someone falls down.

“Once you fall down in a crowd, try to bend your knees forward and lie on your side. This way, you can protect crucial organs in your chest and abdomen,” Gu told the reporter while showing the position. “Try to interlock your hands behind your head.”
