THIS year marks the 120th anniversary of business education at Peking University (PKU), which originated from the business course at the Imperial University of Peking in 1902.

In celebration of this important milestone, Peking University HSBC Business School (PHBS) organized a commemoration event and the Business Education Development Forum on Saturday afternoon, which was attended by faculty, students, alumni, scholars and experts either online or in person.

Wang Pengfei, associate dean of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKU Shenzhen), dean of PHBS and chair professor of economics, addressed the commemoration opening, pointing out that PKU’s business education is defined by three keywords, namely tribute, inheritance and innovation. Wang encouraged fellow teachers and students to take responsibilities to heart and decode and respond to the changing circumstances.

Chair Prof. Hai Wen, vice chairman of PKU Council, former vice president of PKU, and founding dean of PHBS, delivered a keynote speech. He noted that modern business education nurtures entrepreneurs, senior managers, mid-level managers, backbone technicians and professionals. He said business education should be closely connected with enterprises, keep updated with technological development, closely monitor the international environment and contribute to social progress. He suggested that business schools in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) should work on composing classic business cases, enhance theoretical research capabilities, improve teaching and training, and strengthen exchanges and communication, in a bid to make their due contributions to the innovation and long-term development of the GBA.

Ma Weihua, member of the Global Steering Committee for the U.N. Sustainable Development Impact Investment, gave a keynote speech via video. In his speech, Ma called on students to learn from their predecessors to cope with challenges and make new contributions to the world’s sustainable development.

Following keynote speeches, two forums themed “Business Education and Innovative Development in the GBA” and “Enterprises Development and Business Talents Cultivation” were held, where leaders from top universities in the GBA, as well as executives from tech giants, large companies and research institutes exchanged their views on business education and business talent cultivation.
