SHENZHEN officially implemented management methods over sharing major science and technology infrastructures and research equipment among research institutes, enterprises and researchers staring from Dec. 10.

The opening of science and technology infrastructures and encouraging science institutions to share facilities is believed to accelerate the development of basic research, enhance the city’s tech innovation capability and lay the foundation for its future development.

Shenzhen GeneWell Technology Co. Ltd. was founded by two graduates from Cambridge University in 2018. As an innovative and high-tech enterprise, it provides molecular diagnostic reference standards for genetic testing industry. During a research, they used two major scientific facilities, the Beckman ultra-high speed centrifuge at Dapeng New Area Science and the Technology Innovation Service Center and BD FACSAria-III at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

“The facilities are expensive and take a long time for import. The platform for sharing major scientific facilities relieved our urgency and saved us costs,” Geng Huijin, a researcher from GeneWell, said at an interview.

According to the rule, scientific facilities with fund investments exceeding 500,000 yuan (US$71,800) from governments must open to the public for scientific and technological research and activities.

Statistics showed that a total of 4,884 units of equipment, costing over 500,000 yuan each, have been registered in the city’s major scientific facilities sharing platform. The facilities are 100% open to the public with a 109% utility rate.

By the end of 2021, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, with 217 units of equipment worth around 298 million yuan, had shared all its facilities with over 300 institutions and enterprises like Catl, DJI, CNOOC and Sunwoda, data from the school showed.

“The facilities will create more value when they are shared among institutions and enterprises and enhance exchanges between them,” Ma Lan, deputy chief of school, said at an interview.

In May 2021, Xue Qikun, president of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) proposed opening the scientific facilities of X-Lake International Science City, having a legislation over sharing science and technology facilities, and establishing a shared assessment mechanism.
