SHENZHEN yesterday unveiled a total of 1,378 posts to attract postdoctoral degree holders from around the world to work at its 34 top-notch research institutes, universities and firms.

The move is to push forward the development of the city’s strategic emerging industries and future industry clusters, and enhance cultivation of young tech talents, according to the city’s human resources and social security bureau.

For the first time, Shenzhen is recruiting postdoctoral degree holders at such a large scale. The posts were simultaneously unveiled in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia. Regardless of nationality, postdoctorates are welcome to apply for the jobs.

Among the posts, 499 are provided by 12 higher learning institutions and research institutes in the city, including the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT), and Shenzhen Bay Laboratory. Another 203 posts are offered by nine hospitals and 676 by 13 enterprises engaged in manufacturing, finance and biomedicine. Out of the total, 101 posts will play parts in academician-led research teams.

The annual salaries range between 350,000 yuan (US$50,250) and 600,000 yuan, with some posts offering salaries up to 1 million yuan.

Postdoctorates play an important role in the city’s science innovation and industrial development and the city’s appeal to foreign scientists has been increasing, according to the bureau.

Shenzhen Bay Laboratory has recently attracted Fedir Kiskin, a postdoctoral research scientist from Cambridge University with experience in cardiovascular research, stem cell differentiation and drug discovery, to carry out biomedicine research.

Data showed that the city has so far introduced 1,828 postdoctorates this year, including 115 from foreign countries and 10 from China’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The number of postdoctorates in Shenzhen grows fast, with an annual growth rate of over 30% year on year from 2017 to 2021, according to official data. About 50% of postdoctorates introduced during the period graduated from China’s top universities and top 150 overseas universities in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
