CREATIVE calligraphic works by Chinese artist He Chi are on display at the “Flourish” exhibition at the Gallery MC in OCT-LOFT.

Since 2004, He has been creating unique calligraphic works based on ancient masterpieces. He applies colors in some strokes, giving calligraphy a contemporary twist. The “Flourish” exhibition mainly presents the artist’s regular-script calligraphy based on some ancient works from the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

The exhibition is not only the visual manifestation of He’s colorful calligraphy, but also provides a reflection on the Chinese civilization built with Chinese characters.

The Tang Dynasty saw the perfection of Chinese calligraphy, with flourishing works for later calligraphy learners. That was an age of prosperity in the history of Chinese civilization. Pieces by Ouyang Xun (557-641), Yan Zhenqing (709-784) and Liu Gongquan (778-865) have been admired by calligraphy learners for centuries. Their works reflect the core spirit of traditional calligraphy and the expression of humanity.

A graduate from the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, He creates works in a variety of forms, including poetry, performance art, installation, sculpture, video, photography, painting and calligraphy.
