A TOTAL of 122 cases and 1,331 pieces/sets of works covering fine arts, art, science, technology and other fields are on display in Shenzhen, as the Fourth China Design Exhibition & Public Art Thematic Exhibition officially opened yesterday in this dynamic city with a strong cultural identity and history of innovation and creativity.

The national design and public art exhibition, held every three years, seeks to serve as a professional and comprehensive platform that gathers and exhibits the latest Chinese design and public art works.

Lu Yingchuan, vice minister of culture and tourism and director of the exhibition’s organizing committee, announced the exhibition’s opening at a ceremony at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning in Futian District.

In his speech, Lu said the exhibition, a grand design and public art event, is a concentrated display of a large number of Chinese design and public art achievements, as well as Chinese aesthetics.

Since its inception, the exhibition has been held in Guangdong Province for four consecutive times, playing a positive role in Guangdong’s cultural powerhouse drive, according to Tan Ling, deputy director of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress.

Shenzhen Mayor Qin Weizhong said that the exhibition will undoubtedly inject more vitality into Shenzhen, a UNESCO City of Design, promote “Shenzhen Design” to better enable high-quality economic development, improve people’s living standards and empower efficient urban governance.

“The exhibition is large in scale and rich in content, reflecting the artists’ intention to create for the people and showing broad prospects for the thriving development of Chinese design and public art,” said Wu Weishan, curator of the National Art Museum of China.

This year’s exhibition, themed “New Start New Wave,” is divided into two parts: the main exhibition and the Bay Area special exhibition, each with five sections. The main exhibition is held at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, while the Bay Area special exhibition takes place at Guan Shanyue Art Museum.

The Bay Area special exhibition, which is set up for the first time, is intended to better serve the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through design and public art.

A virtual exhibition has also been launched, offering a multidimensional display of examples of various cases. Academic forums and public cultural service activities such as guided tours will also be held. The exhibition will last until March 16.

The exhibition is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government and the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government.
