Enjoy Argentine movies at Broadway Cinematheque
    2023-02-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Seven Argentine movies will be shown at the “Un Lugar en el Mundo” (“A Place in the World”) event from Feb. 25 to March 7 at the Broadway Cinematheque. All the movies are in Spanish with Chinese subtitles.

Argentina is one of Latin America’s most prominent filmmaking countries, with a long and outstanding tradition of excellence in cinema. Since 2016, Directores Argentinos Cinematográficos in Argentina and GOTIKA have restored more than 100 old Argentine movies. The seven movies at the Shenzhen event are all in the 4K version, among which “La Película del Rey” won Best First Work at the 43rd Venice Film Festival.

‘La Película del Rey’ (1986)

Plot: A movie director, very fond of the legend of the King of Patagonia and Araucania, decides to make a movie about it. Despite financial troubles, technical problems, misfortune and desertions, he undertakes the journey to Patagonia for the film with a second-rate actor company. Neglected by the producer, he will make the movie alone, in a surreal landscape.

‘Made in Argentina’ (1987)

Plot: Osvaldo and Mabel, an Argentine couple exiled for political reasons in the United States, travel to their country of origin after 10 years to reconnect with their family and friends, including Mabel’s brother and his wife. Mabel offers her brother the possibility of working in New York in order to improve their economic situation, but his wife is opposed to that idea.

‘Un Lugar en el Mundo’ (1992)

Plot: Mario and Ana, in voluntary exile from Buenos Aires, live in a remote valley with their 12-year-old son Ernesto. Mario runs a school and a wool cooperative; Ana, a doctor, heads a clinic with Nelda, a progressive nun. Into this idealistic family comes Hans, a jaded Spanish geological engineer — surveying the land for the local patron, to see if it can be dammed for hydro-electric power, which would drive the peasants from the land into the cities.

‘Sol de Otoño’ (1996)

Plot: Clara Goldstein is a lovely, middle-aged Jewish woman who, because of an impending visit from her U.S. brother, is forced to create a contrived relationship with a man of her own faith. She meets Raul, a well-spoken, handsome and charming man whom she soon discovers is not Jewish and does not fulfill her reason for placing the advertisement. Having no alternative, Goldstein proceeds to instruct Raul with an intensive course. Their journey is both humorous but not without pitfalls.

‘La Sonámbula’ (1998)

Plot: In a dystopian society, a government uses therapy and dreams to recover, or perhaps implant, memories to those lacking them.

‘Historias Mínimas’ (2002)

Plot: Three people and a baby set off on separate journeys, along the same road; their disparate dreams and stories intertwine amid the breathtaking deserted Patagonic route.

‘Lugares Comunes’ (2002)

Plot: In Buenos Aires, literature professor Fernando Robles is retired and concludes that it is impossible to live with his pension. The crisis in Argentina does not allow him to get a new job, and his wife decides to sell their apartment and move to a small farm near Villa Dolores to reduce their expenses. Robles comes up with the idea to grow lavender and sell the oil to the perfume industry.

Ticketing: WeChat miniprogram “百老汇影城”

Venue: Broadway Cinematheque, 5/F, MixC World, Nanshan District (华润万象天地五楼深圳百老汇电影中心)

Metro: Line 1 to Hi-tech Park Station (高新园站), Exit A
