THE city’s transport terminals and theme parks witnessed record number of visitors during the May Day holiday, indicating a full recovery in terms of consumption.

Data from Window of the World showed the theme park attracted 200,000 visitors during the holiday, a new record during the May Day holiday in the park’s history. On Sunday, the park received 58,800 visitors, the second-highest number in the park’s history.

Another theme park, Happy Valley, received 150,000 visitors during the holiday.

“Happy Valley posted a record high of visitors over the May Day holiday in 25 years, and the number of visitors to the theme park was up 70% over the same period in 2019,” Fu Shihai, deputy manager of the theme park, said during an interview yesterday. To mark the park’s 25th anniversary, it organized eight themed activities including Maya Music Festival, Cosplay Party and Pop Street Dance, among others, to attract visitors.

Railway service

Around 450,000 passengers arrived in Shenzhen via railway yesterday, the last day of the May Day holiday, data from Shenzhen North Railway Station showed.

A total of 1,051 trains were put on track yesterday to handle all departing and arriving passengers in the city. The railway operator estimated that the peak of returning passengers will last until today.

During the May Day holiday period between April 27 and Tuesday, the city’s railways transported 2.3 million passengers, 26.5% more than the same period in 2019. On Sunday, Shenzhen North Railway Station sent 313,000 passengers, a new record in the station’s 12-year history and 12.3% more over the single-day record of 278,800 during this year’s Spring Festival. The figure is 51% more than that of the same period in 2019.

Flight, ferry services

Around 160,000 passengers departed from and arrived in Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport yesterday. On Friday, the eve of the May Day holiday, the passenger turnover hit 182,500, a new single-day record.

The number of passengers taking ferries at Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal reached 3,500 Friday, triple the average during regular days. The ferry terminal now operates five routes to Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai, and one sightseeing route.

Metro passenger flow

Shenzhen Metro’s ridership also hit a record of 8.87 million Friday.

On Sunday, the number of visitors to Shenzhen Bay Park reached over 200,000, which forced the Metro operator to close Shenzhen Bay Park Station due to the heavy passenger flow. As the number of passengers transferring to take buses at Line 8’s Yantian Port Station had increased, the operator also closed the station, and advised passengers to Dameisha to take buses at Exit D after getting off at Yantian Road Station.

Border crossing

The number of inbound travelers via Futian Checkpoint reached 160,000 Sunday, a new record for the checkpoint since border crossing resumed between Shenzhen and Hong Kong this year. The city’s checkpoints saw rise of inbound travelers Tuesday and yesterday, especially during the hours between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.

During the holiday, Shenzhen tourism volunteers’ team organized 15,500 volunteers, including tour guides, and employees from travel agencies, tourist attractions and hotels to serve visitors at theme parks, tourist attractions, commercial centers and pedestrian streets.

Nationally, the railway system handled a total of 19.35 million passenger trips yesterday, data from China Railway Group Corp. showed.
