Overseas Chinese gather to discuss GBA development
    2023-05-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE 2023 Overseas Chinese Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) Conference kicked off in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, yesterday.

About 700 overseas Chinese representatives from 90 countries and regions, including more than 100 overseas Chinese youth, are attending the three-day event, to observe the GBA’s development and tap opportunities for business, investment, employment and education, Xinhua News Agency reported, citing a news conference of the Guangdong Provincial Government.

The event is taking place online and offline, with the main venue located in Jiangmen and subvenues set up in countries and regions such as Malaysia, Thailand, South Africa, the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Panama, Peru, and Hong Kong and Macao SARs.

According to the organizers, the guests are mainly well-known overseas Chinese leaders, representatives from various fields, and overseas Chinese who have made significant contributions to promote exchanges between China and their countries of residence, descendants of well-known patriotic figures, and outstanding individuals with international influence in fields such as politics, economy, science and technology, education and media. The event also invited guests who had just attended the 10th Conference for Friendship of Overseas Chinese Associations in Beijing earlier this month.

Organized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Guangdong government, the event is meant to enhance services for the overseas Chinese and to support their important role in the development of the GBA, organizers said.

Jiangmen is located in the southwest corner of the Pearl River Delta, some 70 kilometers from Guangzhou, and is the birthplace of over 4 million overseas Chinese people who are now located in 107 countries and regions across the world. Jiangmen itself has a population of just over 4 million.
