Cut both ways 各有利弊
    2023-06-01  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: I heard your school introduced strict censorship of content on the internet to make sure the students do not come into contact with porn and other stuff. How is that working?

B: Our criteria are too harsh. Censorship cuts both ways. It prevents children from being corrupted; but it often also prevents them from knowing what is really going on. When they head off into society, they will have to face the truth anyway.

Note: If something cuts both ways, it has two different effects, usually one good and one bad. The image behind this expression is that of a double-edged weapon. For example, a two-edged sword cuts both ways, thus giving us the synonymous idioms “that’s a two-edged sword” and “that cuts both ways.”
