Child health

CHINA’S maternal and infant mortality rates both dropped to historic lows in 2022, the National Health Commission announced at a press conference Wednesday.

China reported a maternal mortality rate of 15.7 per 100,000 in 2022, according to figures from the commission. The mortality rates of infants and children under 5 decreased to 4.9 per 1,000 and 6.8 per 1,000, respectively, both dropping to record lows.

College entrance exam

A RECORD 12.91 million people have applied for this year’s college entrance exam in China, also known as the “gaokao,” marking an increase of 980,000 from 2022, according to figures released by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

The annual national exam will take place in early June.

Young Pioneers

THE Chinese Young Pioneers (CYP), a national mass organization for Chinese children, had about 114.7 million members across the country at the end of 2022, according to figures unveiled Thursday.

The CYP boasted 261,000 primary-level work committees, of which 200,000 were based in primary or middle schools, noted the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, citing data from the CYP work committee.
