SHENZHEN is making significant progress in its endeavor to build a city dedicated to nature education. The city currently boasts 10 provincial-level nature education bases, 22 nature schools, 27 nature education centers, and a membership of 150 units in the Shanhailiancheng Nature Education Alliance, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported, quoting officials from the Shenzhen Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau. “Shanhailiancheng,” which translates to “mountains and seas connecting the city,” is an urban planning initiative aimed at creating an eco-spatial structure featuring a ridge, a coastal belt and 20 ecological corridors. Nature education in Shenzhen originated from activities such as birdwatching and wetland visits around Shenzhen Bay. In 2014, China’s first nature school was established in OCT Wetland Park. From 2015 to 2018, the municipal government spearheaded the establishment of 13 nature education centers. The Shenzhen Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau was subsequently designated as the leading department for nature education, while the Shanhailiancheng Nature Education Alliance was established as a citywide platform for nature education.
