ESCAPE the scorching dog days and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Chinese artist Sean Chen’s colorful oil paintings at a free exhibition at Haiya Mega Mall in Bao’an District.

Through his innovative use of bright colors, Chen breathes new life into Chinese landmarks and skyscrapers, transforming them into a vivid and enchanting world. In his paintings, buildings are wonky, colors are bold, compositions are unusual, and there’s yet more. His paintings, situated between realism and abstraction, offer a unique visual experience that evokes a sense of joy and wonder.

“Artists typically explore a realm beyond time, where art and imagination intertwine,” Chen told Shenzhen Daily in an interview. “The paintings of colorful landmarks render my imaginative vision for the future of China. I use this exaggerated and expressive style to portray a dynamic China, brimming with colors,” he added.

A realm where colors dance and emotions come alive, the exhibition also serves as a chance for visitors to embrace a happy and uplifting atmosphere. Chen endeavors to make a positive and lasting impact on people, reminding us all of the profound emotions that art can inspire.

“I believe in the power of vibrant colors to evoke happiness. I hope my paintings can share joy and aesthetic delight with the public,” he said.

Chen also shows his deep connection to his hometown, Zhuji in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, through his water town-themed paintings, which are also on display here. Capturing the essence of the tranquil Shaoxing water town, he adds colorful hues to some old houses, while gracefully preserving the timeless elegance of others with their pristine white walls. This harmonious blend of colors and preservation pays homage to the town’s rural heritage and beauty of his beloved water town.

By showcasing his artworks in shopping malls, Chen aims to make art accessible to a wider audience, inviting them to appreciate and connect with abstract art. Since 2016, he has exhibited paintings at shopping malls across China. “I think the charm of art lies in spreading happiness and aesthetic pleasure,” he said.

Chen graduated from the Fine Arts School, University of Auckland and has been in New Zealand for 26 years. He has held more than 70 exhibitions around the world. In addition to art creations, he serves as head of Chen’s School of Art and Design of Jiyang College of Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province.
