U.S. fast food chain Shake Shack has issued an apology on Weibo for using expired ingredients in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. It also pledged to conduct a comprehensive inspection across its stores in China. A former employee of Shake Shack’s MixC Wuhan store revealed on social media that the restaurant had used expired cream in their drinks, used expired ketchup, and had removed expired beer labels but continued to sell them, www.shine.cn reported. The employee also alleged that he was fired after reporting the incident to market regulators. Shake Shack (Shanghai) Limited released a statement late Sunday night, admitting that the company’s preliminary internal investigation shows that the store in question failed to dispose of expired canned spray cream in a timely manner in accordance with the company’s food safety management regulations, Global Times reported. The company was still waiting for investigation results from the supervision department about expired ketchup and beer, which had been incorrectly labelled, the report said. The fast food chain also stated that they would punish all their staff involved in this food safety issue, following the company’s rules and relevant laws. This is not Shake Shack’s first incident in China as the company was summoned by the Office of Shanghai Network and Information Security to address excessive collection of personal information last month. On June 20, the company issued a rectification statement through its official channels, indicating that the relevant problems were being resolved. (SD News) |
