Clarinet, musical

Chinese clarinet player Lyu Shuqing will collaborate with pianist Wei Zijian to perform pieces by Finzi, Weber, Debussy, Poulenc and Mucczynski this Saturday. The Chinese musical “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” which is based on a novel by Oscar Wilde, will also be staged. Featuring a group of popular musical actors including Ye Qisheng, Zhang Ze and Liu Yan, this Chinese musical is based on a South Korean version.

Dance dramas

The China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater will present dance dramas “Li Bai” and “Confucius” this week. The shows bring to life the famous poet Li Bai and the influential Chinese philosopher Confucius. Through mesmerizing choreography and stunning visuals, the performances delve into the two ancient masters’ profound wisdom and their significant impact on Chinese culture and history.

Carreras, ‘Ugly Duckling’

Locals will be electrified by the U.S. Lightwire Theater’s presentation of “The Ugly Duckling” tonight. The performers will swirl and stomp through a high-spirited performance which is staged in total darkness, illuminated only by the thin light strips that outline the mechanical costumes worn by the dancers. Spanish operatic lyric tenor José Carreras will give masterclasses and hold a concert with his students from the masterclasses.

Symphonies

Under the baton of Li Xincao, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert featuring great German composers. The program will include Bruckner’s “Symphony in F Minor,” Haydn’s “Symphony No. 96 in E-flat Major,” and “The Knight of the Rose Suite” by Richard Strauss. Li is the chief conductor of the China National Symphony Orchestra.

‘Plock!’
