Meaning:

“二极管” refers to “a diode,” and “思维” means “a way of thinking.” As a diode is an electrical component that allows the flow of current in only one direction, Chinese netizens coined this term to refer to “black-and-white thinking.” Also called dichotomous or polarized thinking, this way of thinking refers to the tendency to think in extremes. It’s considered a cognitive distortion because it keeps us from seeing the world as it often is: complex, nuanced, and full of all the shades in between.

Example:

A: 我发现你从不参加群里的讨论。

Wǒ fāxiàn nǐ cóng bù cānjiā qún lǐ de tǎolùn。

I notice that you never join in group discussions.

B: 有些人抱着二极管思维参加讨论，和这样的人争论没有意义。

Yǒuxiē rén bàozhe èrjíguǎn sīwéi cānjiā tǎolùn，hé zhèyàng de rén zhēnglùn méiyǒu yìyì。
