Nico Yang, G10, RDF International School David Tao, also known as Zee Tao, is widely regarded as the godfather of Mandarin R&B music. Born to a Taiwanese pop singer father and a renowned Peking opera artist mother, Tao inherited a talent for music from his parents. Throughout his career, he has consistently improved musically, while also conveying his thoughts on social issues through his work. In 1997, Tao released his first self-titled album, “David Tao,” which revolutionized the Chinese pop music and propelled Mandarin R&B to new heights. This album showcases his unique ability to blend Taiwanese folk songs with R&B elements, resulting in captivating compositions such as “Airport in 10:30,” “Everything’s Gone,” and “Blue Moon.” The exceptional quality of his debut garnered him nominations for five awards at the 9th Taiwan Golden Melody Awards in 1998, including best composer, best record producer, and best newcomer. For me personally, Tao’s songs are an emotional journey, expressing profound love while shedding light on the darker aspects of society. Each time I immerse myself in his music, the poignant lyrics and captivating melodies transport me into his world. One track that particularly resonates with me is “Regular Friend,” where his dissatisfaction, regret, and sorrow upon losing his girlfriend become palpable. In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Tao, who resided in the United States at the time, sought to delve deeper into the meaning and significance of human existence. This introspection led to the creation of his album “Black Orange,” which aimed to convey a message of love and hope. Tao’s concert themed “Soul Power” left an indelible impression on me. During this event, he combined his songs with elements of Chinese folk music, accompanied by traditional Chinese instruments, and gave proof that music has the power to help individuals overcome painful memories. As his musical journey continues, Tao keeps innovating and incorporating diverse elements into his compositions. I deeply admire him not only for his creative genius in music but also for his dedication to personal growth. He serves as a positive influence, inspiring me to embrace challenges and strive for self-improvement throughout my life. |
