Sing for one’s supper 干活换取回报
    2023-08-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: I absolutely adore the farm life. Would it be possible for me to extend my stay with your family for another week?

B: Certainly! You’re welcome to stay as long as you like, but you’ll have to sing for your supper while you’re here.

Note: This idiom means “To obtain something by working for it or by providing another service in return.” This metaphor alludes to the wandering minstrels who in the old times performed in English taverns and were paid with a meal. It appears in the familiar nursery rhyme “Little Tommy Tucker Sings for His Supper.”
