Shenzhen power demand jumps to record high
    2023-08-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN’S electricity consumption, a key barometer of economic activity, has surged as the city’s economy’s continued improvement, coupled with recent rising temperatures, has pushed up power demand.

According to the Shenzhen power supply bureau of China Southern Power Grid, the city’s power grid reached a new peak in electricity demand to exceed 22 million kilowatt hours for the first time in history Friday, growing 2.99% year on year.

To meet a surge in power demand brought by the city’s rapid economic recovery, the Shenzhen power supply bureau has promoted technological transformations characterized by digitization and intelligence.

The wide use of high technologies has provided reliable power supply for the city. These technologies allowed 30 engineers to remotely inspect the power supply equipment in 607 power stations and over 5,200 kilometers of power transmission lines in a day Friday. Previously, the same workload would require more than 60 people and nearly a week to complete.

Electricity data especially highlight the growth in the industrial and service sectors, as factories operate at full capacity and consumer demand further expands in Shenzhen.

Electricity use of the service sector accounted for more than one-third of Shenzhen’s total power consumption in the first four months of the year, according to earlier data provided by China Southern Power Grid, one of the country’s two major power grids whose business covers Shenzhen. This indicates the full recovery of the city’s service industry and consumption, according to industry analysts. (Yang Yunfei)
