12 SZ researchers chosen as candidates of top academies

YAN NING, an internationally acclaimed structural biologist, has emerged as one of the 12 distinguished researchers in Shenzhen who have been nominated as valid candidates for the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).


The announcements were made by the country’s top academic institutions Thursday.


Yan, head of the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation; Wang Liping from the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Huang Sanwen from the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Agricultural Genomics, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences have been listed as candidates for the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine of the CAS.


The other four Shenzhen researchers who have been named as CAS candidates are Pan Feng from Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Xia Haiping from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Fang Hongwei from Tsinghua University and SUSTech, as well as Zheng Hairong from Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.


Five accomplished researchers from Shenzhen have been nominated as CAE candidates, namely Lian Yubo from BYD, Li Qingquan from Shenzhen University, Shen Xiangyang from Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Digital Economy Research Institute in Futian, Xu Wenwei from Huawei Technologies, and Cao Leifeng from Shenzhen Technology University.


The two institutions initiated the process for selecting new members May 31. The CAS will welcome 79 new members and the CAE will enroll about 90 new members in 2023.


Membership of the CAS and the CAE is China’s highest academic title in science and engineering, and it is a lifelong honor. New members are selected every two years.     (SD News)
