CHINA has launched a campaign to gather the strength of academicians and experts to promote high-quality national science popularization.

The “Science and China” academician and expert lecture tour issued a proposal at the launch ceremony Saturday, calling on Chinese academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) to play a leading role in the national science popularization cause and push forward international exchanges and cooperation.

Overseas Chinese

THE 11th national congress of returned overseas Chinese and their relatives concluded in Beijing on Sunday.

The congress called on branches of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese to bring together returned overseas Chinese, their relatives, and Chinese people living overseas to contribute to China’s modernization drive, national rejuvenation, and the development of a human community with a shared future.

Panda passes away

GIANT panda Cheng Gong passed away Sunday morning at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding at the age of 23, roughly equivalent to 70 to 80 human years, the base announced yesterday.

No abnormal conditions were observed in her enclosure, said the base in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Cheng Gong, or “Success” in English, had given birth to nine panda cubs.
