Nightingale Medal

SEVEN Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal on Tuesday for their outstanding contributions to healthcare at a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

China had the largest number of recipients of the 49th Florence Nightingale Award, as 37 nurses from 22 countries won the medal this year.

2 killed in flood

TWO people have been confirmed dead and another remains missing after a typhoon-triggered flood hit parts of Fuzhou City, East China’s Fujian Province, in the early hours of Tuesday.

At around 4:15 a.m., a fire engine carrying nine rescuers was swept away in Chili Village, Yongtai County, by floodwaters during a rescue operation, according to the National Fire and Rescue Administration.

As of approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday, eight firefighters have been rescued. Six are in stable condition and two have been confirmed dead despite rescue efforts. A search for the missing person is under way.

Wetting trend

A NEW study has disclosed that the abnormal warming of the tropical Indian Ocean is probably a key factor for the recent wetting trend in Northwest China, according to Lanzhou University.

Investigating and understanding the long-term natural precipitation variability in Northwest China provides insights into the recent wetting trend in this drought-plagued region, said Li Guoqiang, a professor at the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Lanzhou University.
