My study tour in San Francisco
    2023-09-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Lucas Zhu, G11, RDF International School

This summer vacation, I attended a two-week summer program in San Francisco, the United States. It has been the most meaningful and unforgettable vacation I’ve ever had.

The summer program was organized by University of California (UC), Davis, one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S. The campus, situated on a vast plain adorned with lush greenery, offers a serene and comfortable environment, in stark contrast to the bustling cities I am accustomed to.

The program was centered around preparing college application documents, acquiring effective note-taking techniques in class, and developing college-level study skills. Throughout the courses, we were fortunate to be instructed by three humorous teachers. Among them, one teacher named Hardy impressed me the most. During our first class, Hardy employed interactive games to get us acquainted with our classmates. We were required to remember each other’s names and interests, which we had shared during the self-introduction session. Hardy’s teaching, dotted with witty expressions, was engaging and informative, and his lectures on college-level study skills captivated our attention through class activities.

Previously, I had no idea how to write application essays for universities. We were encouraged to begin crafting our application essays from the very first day. I recall the initial struggle I faced in producing a coherent essay. Mine had been laden with myriad format and content-related mistakes. Yet, our tutor, with good patience, explained proper essay writing and provided insightful suggestions. I gradually grasped the art of crafting logical essays using fluent language. I was able to produce a qualified essay by the end of the program.

Time flew by quickly, and before I knew it, the last day of the program arrived. To mark this occasion, the tutors delivered heartfelt speeches and presented each of us with a certificate of award. I took many photographs with my tutors and classmates.

I wish to participate in similar activities in the future, as they provide valuable opportunities for me to explore unknown fields.
