Hetao park to be world-level tech platform: official

GUANGDONG will support building the Shenzhen Park of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone into a platform for sci-tech cooperation that gathers the world’s top innovation resources.

At a news conference in Shenzhen yesterday, Zhu Wei, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, outlined four major tasks for the development of the Shenzhen park, namely, synergizing with Hong Kong to promote international sci-tech innovation, building the park into an internationally competitive industrial pilot production base, creating an internationalized sci-tech innovation mechanism and building an optimal ecology that gathers the world’s top innovation resources.

Despite its small size, Zhu said the zone plays a unique role as a platform and channel for its superior geological location between Hong Kong’s northern metropolitan area and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, with a half-an-hour “research circle” to Guangming Science City and Hong Kong Science Park, and one-hour “industrial circle” to other cities in the GBA.

Another advantage is the zone’s strong innovation vitality backed by Shenzhen’s strong industrial innovation and research capabilities of  Hong Kong universities, according to Zhu.

Zhu said the development of the Shenzhen park will focus on “three collaborations,” namely the collaboration with Guangming Science City to become a powerhouse of original innovation in the GBA, the collaboration with the Hong Kong part of the zone to become a new benchmark for sci-tech cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and the collaboration with the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong and Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macao sci-tech innovation corridors to form a globally influential international tech innovation center.

According to a plan released by the State Council last month, the two cities will complement each other with their respective strengths, making the zone a key engine for the high-quality development of the GBA.

Huang Min, executive vice mayor of Shenzhen, said the city is now sparing no efforts to accelerate the implementation of the plan.

“More than 150 high-end science and innovation projects are being implemented in the park, which have formed industrial advantages in information technology, quantum technology and biopharmacy. The city has prepared a total of 800,000 square meters of space for research and industrial use. Eleven industrial parks have been put into use in the Shenzhen park,” Huang said.

So far, 10 major platforms, mostly various research institutes, and 10 major Hong Kong university research projects have settled in the Shenzhen park.
