TWO professors from Shenzhen, namely Liu Xinyuan, a chair professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), and Song Qinghai, a professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, were among the 48 young scientists honored with the Fifth Xplorer Prize, according to an awarding ceremony organized by the New Corner Stone Science Foundation in Dapeng New Area on Saturday.

Liu won the prize for his contributions to the chemistry of new materials. Song, along with his team, has played a pivotal role in providing both theoretical and technical support for the advancement of micro and nanophotonics in China.

The Xplorer Prize, a nonprofit award, was established in 2018 with an initial donation of 1 billion yuan (US$137 million) from Tencent Foundation. Its primary aim is to inspire and assist young scientists, aged 45 or younger, in engaging with critical fields such as life sciences and advanced manufacturing.

Each year, the Xplorer Prize awards 50 outstanding scientists, with each recipient receiving a total grant of 3 million yuan over the next five years.
