THE news that K-pop star Lisa of the popular girl group Blackpink will perform at Crazy Horse, a French nightclub known for its erotic dance shows, has raised the ire of her Chinese fans.

Lisa has a huge following among teenagers, with nearly 100 million followers on Instagram. Her influence on teenagers makes the Crazy Horse gig an irresponsible decision from a beloved idol. The night club features striptease shows in which performers present their bodies in a sexual way to cater to male customers. Such a show treats women as objects and exploits their bodies without showing them basic respect.

Most of Lisa’s fans are teenagers, who sometimes find it difficult to tell right from wrong. What’s worse, they might even regard the pornographic dancing as a respectable artistic form. Idols should act prudently and be a role model for their followers, particularly when the followers are minors.

Women’s physical beauty is transient and short-lived. Instead of leveraging their physical attraction to woo audiences, a better way for idols to grow and mature is to learn, practice and develop artistic talent, be it singing, dancing, composing or writing lyrics.Yu Jinhang via email
