THE Shenzhen Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau has recently unveiled a list of place names for protection and place name introductions, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

The place names, 112 in total, include 63 traditional cultural and historical place names, 17 place names associated with the revolutionary past of the Communist Party of China, and 32 place names related to reform and opening up.

The list of the first batch of place names to be protected was formed following the bureau’s evaluation on the city’s place names with a long history, rich cultural connotations, characteristics of the revolutionary past and reform and opening up, online voting, and solicitation of opinions from district governments, relevant departments, and experts.

Traditional cultural and historical place names refer to those with a long history and rich cultural connotations, or strong connection with historical events and figures.

The place names include those of administrative regions and residential areas such as Bao’an, Longgang, Dapeng, Meilin and Shatoujiao; geographical features such as Wutong Mountain, Fenghuang Mountain, Shenzhen River, Maozhou River, and Neilingding Island; commemorative tourist attractions such as Nantou Ancient Town, Dawan Ancestral Residence, and Qingping Ancient Ruins, as well as transportation facilities such as Luohu Bridge.

Shenzhen’s revolutionary history is equally honored through 17 place names such as the former site of the Command Headquarters of the Dongjiang Guerrilla Force and the site of the first Party congress of Bao’an County.

The place names of reform and opening up include Luohu, Dongmen, Huaqiangbei, Xiangmihu, Shekou, Xili, Sea World, Guangming Farm, Deng Xiaoping Bronze Statue, Pioneering Bull Sculpture, Qianhai Stone, Shennan Boulevard, and Shenzhen University.
